Mouthful of Truth

1. Mouthful of truth
It’s a gun but a word
And you already know
That it’s done and it’s heard
It’s an echoing blow
It’s cage but a laugh
Only heard by a few
It’s a gift that’s a gaff
In the mouth of the truth
It’s a kind that’s a pack
And it feeds on its own
It’s an end, an attack
It’s a trap, it’s a home
It’s a name but a clique
Where an empty resides
It is hope bent as sick
Where the optimist dies
It’s a gun but a word
And you already know
Now it’s done Now it’s heard
It’s an echoing blow
It’s a fist in the gut
Only felt by a few
It’s a gift that’s a gaff
In the mouth of the truth

We Know

2. We know
Took a while to see the races
Now you run to keep from falling
Your legs they move in endless rhythms
Whistle blown from corners far
No rest from life’s hard business
Out of time in each stale story
Got you reaching for protection
No one’s punching out your card
You’re over it
We know
You’re under it
We know
Taking space between the moments
Waiting for the next to beckon
You find yourself drifting elsewhere
Maybe a glimpse of forgotten time
Before we knew a guilt of failure
and the weight of expectation
We were made by the maker’s bargain
Absolution for agency
Square your peg to keep from fitting
And roughen up all your edges
Take a step in a new direction
See the hole you keep on digging
It’s ok to break your system
A neighbor’s scorn won’t last forever
Walk away and we will find you
You might even find yourself

A Lovely Place

3. A lovely place (for bones)
From the west sequoia, in the east bloodroot cries
Trampled and broken, in the light of the morning rise
It’s lovely place, for her bones
It’s frightening place to call a home
It’s lovely place, for our bones
It’s a darkest stain never owned
In the earth she is planted, from her bones the sweetgrass grows
It will cast no shadow, not a trace for comfort sown

Hearing Voicess

Did you hear the voices
Screaming on TV
Narrowing of choices
Now you have to believe
If they press the question
You’ll never hear the lie
Sinking is the feeling
Something’s just not right
Maybe there are answers
Deep between the lines
Obscured by so much cancer
They are so hard to find
Let me fall I’m shaken from this burning tree
To live inside a story is to not be free
I’ve clung to words and mantras in fear of being alone
So let me fall and break it, this empty form
Did you see the pictures
Dressed out on the news
You become eyewitness
But we see what we choose
Did you hear a promise
Entangled in the lies
That the tribe brings solace
And you are safe inside
Did you see the victims
Sprawled out on the floor
Martyrs turned malignant
What are we fighting for
That which brings us comfort
Draws the deepest line
And we concede to live there
As we are safe inside

Jupiter Hearts Charlotte, North Carolina
Jupiter Hearts is Rob Pennington (Endpoint, BTGOG, Black Cross), Charlie Wood, Tim Kriependorf (Triple Threat), and Scott Wishart (Late Bloomer, Scout). Their sound, an amalgam of their experiences growing up in different punk scenes, is reminiscent of spirited mid-eighties punk. Pennington’s lyrics are both personal and political, consistent with the Jupiter-sized intention behind the music. ... more
